Four Signs Your Air Conditioning System Needs Repair

As we head towards the warmer months of summer, many of us will rely on air conditioning systems to keep us cool in our homes and workplaces. Air conditioners are relied upon in a wide number of buildings and industries, from offices to factories, hotels, shops, and even our cars, so it can be highly inconvenient when they malfunction.

A broken air conditioner can lead to hot, uncomfortable conditions which aren’t pleasant for anyone, and this can have an effect on productivity if your staff are slowly roasting in the workplace. A problem with your air conditioning system may not be immediately obvious, but if you notice any of the four signs below, call a professional for maintenance and repairs.

Hot air
Check the thermostat first to make sure it’s set to cool air, but if your air conditioner is still blowing out hot or warm air, this is a strong indication that the system’s compressor is in need of repair. Other potential causes include restricted airflow or a refrigerant leak.

Strange smells
Unpleasant or musty smells could be a sign that your air conditioner is leaking fluids, or simply needs a good clean. Musty smells and mold indicate a cleaning issue, but if you smell an exhaust fume odour there’s a good chance you have a leak. A ‘gunpowder’ smell indicates a problem with a fan motor or circuit board, but whatever the smell, call an engineer out asap to take a look.

Unusual noises
Most air conditioners make some low level buzzing or background noise, but rattling or grinding sounds could indicate loose parts, broken motor bearings or parts which need lubrication. Don’t ignore any unusual noises - leaving them unattended can cause further damage to your unit which can lead to costly repairs.

Water leaks
Air conditioners use a fluid called refrigerant to cool down spaces, but a pool of water or excess condensation means there could be a leak. Water leaks show that your air conditioning system isn’t functioning properly, and it can cause structural damage to a property if not dealt with.
